Biography:

Roland Schimmelpfennig is one of the most produced European playwrights, whose plays have been translated into over 20 languages.

Roland worked as a journalist in Istanbul before studying directing at Otto-Falkenberg-School, Munich. Following his studies, he became Assistant Director at the Kammerspiele Munich and a member of their artistic team in 1995. He has worked as a freelance author since 1996. Following a year spent in the United States in 1998, Roland was dramaturg at Schaubühne Berlin from 1999 to 2001, then author-in-residence at Schauspielhaus Hamburg for the 2001/2002 season. He is regularly commissioned by leading German theatres, including Staatstheater Stuttgart and Hanover, Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Burgtheater Vienna, Schauspielhaus Zurich, Deutsches Theater Berlin as well as internationally in Copenhagen, Stockholm, Toronto and Tokyo. Roland received the Mülheimer Theaterpreis 2010 for The Golden Dragon, which premiered at Burgtheater Vienna in 2009. His first novel An einem klaren, eiskalten Januarmorgen zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts (2016), was nominated for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize.
